Creativity Emerges From Chaos

Chaos

Chaos…F5 tornados, refugees fleeing war torn countries, terrorism, economic uncertainty, job loss, alcoholism, depression, divorce. The list could go on and on, but I would probably stop reading so I’m guessing that you might stop reading too.

Equip the Family to be a School of Love

In fact, I rarely watch the news anymore because global and national chaos can be overwhelming for me. When you add economic stress and family situations to a broader chaotic climate, I struggle to move forward. I am paralyzed. And that’s a problem because my job is to create educational resources that equip and empower the family to be the school of love to create compassionate, loving, wise, and peacemaking people.

The chasm seems so wide. With families falling apart at consistently high rates, how can we begin to create these resources? Fortunately for me I work with a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who is also a Hebrew scholar. He reminds me that chaos is where God creates.

“In the beginning when God began to create the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while God’s ruach (breath, spirit) swept over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:1-2, NRS)

The word translated as “formless void” can mean formlessness, confusion, unreality, emptiness. When I become overwhelmed by the emotions of sadness, loss, grief, and frustration among others, I can sense the formlessness, the confusion, the unreality, the emptiness.

But that’s precisely when and where God begins to create. So what does that mean for my chaos? Will God create there too? The NRS translates rachaph as “swept over”, but it can also mean “hover”.

As God begins to create, God hovers over the chaos. I don’t want to hover over chaos. I prefer to quickly move through it so that I don’t run the risk of getting caught up in its rage and intensity. But God hovers over the chaos.Chaos

What would it look like to hover over the chaos of our lives? My chaos right now is centered on my work life. How do I create educational materials that speak to the chaos of family life in a hope-filled, healing way? I suppose for the moment, I will attempt to hover over the chaos, to look into the face of the abyss, and to pay attention.

I stumbled upon this while going through this site and it spoke to me. Chaos is everywhere but I have never thought that creativity can come from it. Maybe I am small minded. My chaos right now is my family with my children, my daughter in particular. Our relationship is chaotic or so it seems. It gives me hope that hear that God is hovering and that this is where he creates. I am hopeful that through this chaos with her we can create something better, a more loving, honest and respectful relationship. I’ll hover and see…..
